A new chapter in the bilateral relations between Norway and Greece started with the signing of the agreement on the new EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms 2021-2028 , which took place in Brussels on September 12th.
With this new agreement, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein allocate more than €3.268 billion to projects and programmes to 15 EU member states (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Greece). Norway provides 97% of the funding.
€159.3m allocated to Greece
€159.3m will be allocated to Greece. Negotiations between the Norwegian and Greek governments will start shortly to work out a portfolio of programmes and specify the Greek and Norwegian partners that will cooperate on the implementation. The funds will be focused on the European green transition, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, social inclusion and resilience.
The Ambassador of Norway to Greece Lajla Brandt Jakhelln is pleased with the signing of the new agreements, which are an important component of the cooperation between Norway and the EU. "The Grants also represent a unique tool for strengthening the bilateral cooperation between Norway and Greece. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the EEA Agreement in 1994 which brings our two countries together in a single market without trade barriers. Through this period of time, our two countries have had the opportunity to work together, strengthening the common values and principles we share, as well as cooperating in the implementation of joint programmes and activities which foster social and economic stability, prosperity and security".
