The Embassy in Washington, D.C., is Norway’s largest bilateral mission, with a staff of around 50 (of which approximately half are local employees). The diplomats include Foreign Service personnel, as well as envoys from a number of other Government ministries and the office of the Defense Attaché.
The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C. represents Norway in the United States and works to strengthen the close ties between our two countries. The Embassy covers a wide range of areas, including political and economic affairs, defense cooperation, energy and trade policy, cultural exchange, and public diplomacy. As part of our team, you will play a key role in shaping the Embassy’s public engagement and communications strategy at an important time in the transatlantic relationship.
The mission of the Embassy is to further develop relations with all parts of the U.S. Government, including the administration, the U.S. Congress, and individual states, across all areas of cooperation.
Job Description
We are seeking a creative, proactive, and strategically minded Communications Officer to join our team. In this role, you will help promote Norway’s values, policies, and priorities to a U.S. audience through a variety of digital and traditional media channels. You will work closely with Embassy leadership and colleagues across all departments (particularly with the Counselor on Communications and Culture), as well as with partners in Norway and in the U.S., to deliver clear, engaging, and consistent messaging.
Duties:
- Develop and implement the Embassy’s communications strategy in collaboration with Embassy colleagues and leadership
- Write, edit and proofread colleagues' letters, speeches, and other communication materials
- Create, edit, and manage content for the Embassy’s digital channels, including social media, newsletters, and the website
- Write occasional columns for Norwegian-American publications about various aspects of Norwegian culture
- Support the planning and organizing of public diplomacy and cultural events
- Assist in media relations (press inquiries, writing press releases, and arranging interviews and media events).
- Take photos at Embassy events
Qualifications:
- A university degree in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of relevant professional experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; Norwegian language skills are an advantage.
- Strong understanding of the U.S. media landscape and digital communication trends.
- Proven ability to create compelling content and manage communications across multiple platforms.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A keen interest in international affairs and knowledge of Norwegian foreign policy and society.
