International strategy for freedom of expression

Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and essential to democracy. This week, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide presented Norway’s new international strategy for the promotion of freedom of expression.

Freedom of expression, including free access to information, is a fundamental human right. Freedom of expression is essential to enable people to acquire knowledge and form their own opinions. Freedom of expression is also a cornerstone of a vibrant democracy where all members of society can take part in a free exchange of views and ideas and influence social development. In pluralistic societies, an open dialogue where opinions can be pitted against each other helps to promote democracy and safeguard human rights.
