New rules on dual citizenship

As of January 2020, Norway has introduced new laws that entitles anyone who is or wishes to become a Norwegian citizen to dual citizenship.

The new law caters for the following cases:

  1. Norwegians can retain their Norwegian citizenship if they become citizens of another country.
  2. Foreigners can retain their first citizenship if they satisfy the conditions for and are granted Norwegian citizenship.
  3. Those who have lost their Norwegian citizenship under the previous regulations will be able to reclaim it.

For all cases you must check whether the country you are or becoming a citizen of accepts that you can hold dual citizenship.

You can register applications for dual citizenship on the webpage of the Norwegian Directorate for Immigration. For the time being, it is not possible to reserve an appointment to submit applications and supporting documents at Norwegian foreign missions. This will be possible as soon as the technical solutions are in place.
