In the context of Vietnam’s strong political will and commitment to addressing climate change including the ambitious commitment to reach net-zero target by 2050, which has been confirmed in the updated National Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted at COP27 in Cairo, radical transformation in every sector of the economy is needed to meet the threat of climate change. A shift to clean and renewable energy, including wind power, is at the centre of this transition

Norway is a member of JETP (Just Energy Transition Partnership) initiated by the UK and G7 countries’ efforts to establish with large emitters, including Vietnam. Norway will work with development partners to help finance transition to renewable energy.

The private sector will have to play a key role in this green shift. Norwegian companies in the renewable energy have been working with their local partners and making great contributions to the country's common efforts.

Norwegian companies can bring a wealth of experience in developing ocean-based solutions such as offshore wind; green shipping; carbon capture, utilization, and storage; hydrogen, and electric mobility.

EQUINOR

Equinor is a broad energy company committed to providing affordable energy to societies worldwide and taking a leading role in the energy transition.

Equinor aim to become a net-zero company, delivering the energy the world needs without contributing to global warming by 2050.

Equinor set an ambition of having 12-16 GW net capacity of renewables by 2030, two thirds from offshore wind. Equinor already power more than one million European homes with renewable electricity from offshore wind farms in the UK and Germany and are in the process of building material offshore wind clusters in the US East Coast, the Baltic Sea, and the North Sea.

Equinor has a leading position in floating offshore wind as operator and developer of Hywind Scotland, Hywind Tampen (start-up Q3 2022) and is ready to develop large-scale GW commercial floating offshore wind farms. Equinor is also well positioned for future offshore wind growth in Asia.

In May 2022, Equinor - Norwegian largest energy company officially opens its representative office in Hanoi, marking an important milestone in Norway-Vietnam business cooperation portfolio. Equinor stands ready to contribute the country’s implementation of its net-zero target by 2050 and green transition efforts. Before that, in October 2021, Equinor, in coordination with the Norwegian Embassy and Innovation Norway in Hanoi completed Report "a Vietnam Supply Chain Study Report for offshore wind" and handed over to the then Minister of Industry and Trade (MOIT) of Vietnam Nguyễn Hồng Diên. The Report also received very constructive technical inputs from the MOIT Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREAV). Read more here.

MAINSTREAM

In 2022, MainstreamRP bears the Norwegian identity when it is merged with Norwegian Aker Offshore Wind to create a stronger renewable company with a 27 GW portfolio across solar, onshore wind and bottom-fixed and floating offshore wind projects.

The floating wind market is projected to grow rapidly in coming years, as several countries have launched ambitious targets to develop gigawatts of wind energy, with about 70-80 percent of offshore wind resources located at water depths only suitable for floating foundations.
