Passport for children

My child needs a new passport, what should I do?

Both parents must attend with the child at the embassy by appointment (send an email to schedule a time).

All passport applicants over 12 years old must provide biometric data (photo, fingerprints, and signature).

Remember that passport applications require the child to have a Norwegian personal number.

What should we bring?

  • Passport, if the child has had one before
  • Belgian residence card or Belgian Paspport/ID card (if the child lives in Belgium or is a citizen of Beglium)
  • Both parents' valid passports or national ID cards. If the passport is expired, additional documentation may be required.

Do both parents need to attend if the child’s parents are divorced?

Yes. From November 1, 2022, a new procedure for giving consent for passports applies. Learn more here: Consent for passports and ID cards for children and young people – Police.no ( only in Norwegian : Samtykke for pass og ID-kort til barn og unge - Politiet.no

If one parent is outside Belgium, consent must be given in person at the police station in Norway or at a Norwegian embassy.

If you have sole custody of the child, you must provide documentation of this (e.g., court ruling).
