Reviving Jewish Cultural Heritage in Europe and Combatting Antisemitism

Norway has for many years supported preservation of Jewish cultural heritage in Europe and has financed projects for around EUR 49 million as part of our contribution to the EU over the past 20 years. This includes both the restoration of synagogues, the preservation of Jewish cemeteries, the dissemination of Jewish culture and the fight against antisemitism.

Norway has, since 2012, through the EEA and Norway Grants, supported initiatives against antisemitism and efforts to increase knowledge, multicultural understanding, and the preservation of Jewish cultural heritage, primarily in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The main focus of these efforts has been to ensure that Jewish cultural heritage, as part of European culture and history, is not erased from memory. The EEA and Norway Grants also provide opportunities to support civil society in the recipient countries and their work against antisemitism.

Between May 2021 and April 2028, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, through the EEA and Norway Grants, will contribute more than EUR 3.2 billion in funding for various projects in 15 recipient countries in the EU.
