Item3 - Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights

Nordic – Baltic Statement, elivered by Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi,
Permanent Representative of Finland

30 June 2023

Mr. President,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic countries.

We thank the Special Rapporteur for his report and his work in promoting the full realization of the right to work as a way of tackling poverty.

Unemployment can have far-reaching effects on individuals and on society as a whole. Full and productive employment and decent work for all contribute to the realization of human rights, including the right to work by reducing poverty and discrimination.

The labour market is not equal for all. We need to better integrate persons in vulnerable situations, including persons with disabilities, into the labour market and ensure social protection for those who are excluded from it. Innovative solutions are necessary to tackle poverty globally as is also ensuring that the greening of the economy is fair and inclusive.

Mr. Special Rapporteur,

How can we make sure that the just transition to a green economy is human rights-based and inclusive of persons with disabilities and others in vulnerable situations?

Thank you.
