Follow-Up Arrangements

Third statement by Norway during the first formal consultation on the Global Compact of Refugees held on 13-14 February 2018. Statement delivered by Counsellor Mr. Kjetil Elsebutangen.

Thank you, co-chair.

The section on follow-up arrangements will require more work. At this stage we would like to express our support for the idea that the adoption of the compact should be followed up by concrete pledges. We welcome further discussion on precisely how this could be done.

We agree that the High Commissioner should include, in his annual report to the General Assembly, an update on the implementation of the programme of action.

We also support the development of indicators by UNHCR, in consultation with states and relevant stakeholders, to monitor and evaluate progress.

Finally, chair, let me add that since the allocated speaking time is so limited in these formal consultations, we believe it is of utmost importance to make efficient use of the time in between the consultations. We will therefore engage actively in informal discussions among states and with UNHCR in the days and weeks ahead.

Thank you.
