Norway and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1908 and the Norwegian Embassy in Tehran opened in 1959.

Norway and Iran had extensive academic and business cooperation before sanctions from the UN, USA and EU made continued involvement in Iran difficult. Statoil (and previously Norsk Hydro) was heavily involved in the Iranian oil sector.

The nuclear deal from January 2016 has normalized bilateral relations, especially within trade. Recent visits from Foreign Minister Brende, Minister of Fisheries Sandberg and several State Secretaries have clearly helped Norwegian export to Iran grow to five times the level during the sanctions.
