Norway and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1908 and the Norwegian Embassy in Tehran opened in 1959.
Norway and Iran had extensive academic and business cooperation before sanctions from the UN, USA and EU made continued involvement in Iran difficult. Statoil (and previously Norsk Hydro) was heavily involved in the Iranian oil sector.
The nuclear deal from January 2016 has made normalization of the bilateral relations possible, especially within business. Visits from Foreign Minister Brende, Fishing Minister Sandberg and several State Secretaries have had a clear impact on Norwegian export to Iran, which at the exit of 2016 was five-doubled since the sanctionsperiod.
