Notification to get back Norwegian citizenship

• From 1 January 2020, it is allowed to have one or more citizenships in addition to a Norwegian citizenship. However, the changes to the Citizenship Act implemented from 1 January 2020 are not retroactive. If you obtained another citizenship by application before 1 January 2020, your Norwegian citizenship was lost from the date your new citizenship was granted. For more information regarding the rules for dual citizenship, please see UDI's website. 

• You can submit a simple notification of citizenship if you have previously been a Norwegian citizen, and lost your Norwegian citizenship because you became a citizen of another country or did not give up your previous citizenship.

• If you lost your Norwegian citizenship because you became a national of another country, you must make sure that this is registered in the Norwegian National Population Register before you can submit a Notification to get back Norwegian citizenship. If it is not already registered that you have become a national of another country, you should send a letter to the Embassy and include a certified copy of your passport and your Citizenship Certificate. The general processing time for registration of other citizenships is approximately three weeks.

• If you do not fulfill the requirements for submitting a Notification to get back Norwegian citizenship, you may instead be eligible to submit an application for Norwegian citizenship. 

• You must always check whether the country you are a citizen of accepts that you get dual citizenship, or whether you will lose your citizenship automatically if you become a Norwegian citizen. You must check this with the authorities in that country. 

• Dual citizens have the same rights and obligations in relation to the Norwegian state as other Norwegian citizens.

• In principle, dual citizens are entitled to consular aid and help from the authorities of both countries. However, it can be difficult for Norwegian authorities to help you if you are staying in the country in which you have your other citizenship.

• All enquiries about Notifications to get back Norwegian citizenship should be addressed to UDI or the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok. 

When registering your application online, UDI will provide you with a checklist tailored for your specific situation. You must gather all the documents in the checklist before submitting your application. 

Please note that your passport and official documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas etc.) must be handed in in original. In addition, you must provide certified copies of the same documents. Some documents may require an apostille or legalisation.

Original passports and official documents are returned to you during your appointment.

Before you can hand in your passport and other documentation at the embassy, you must register your application in the Application Portal. If this is the first time that you are registering an application in the portal, you will first need to create a user account. 

Once you have registered, you will receive confirmation by email, with a cover letter attached. You will also receive a checklist for required supporting doumuments. The cover letter will confirm that you have filled in the application form. You need to print this letter and submit it together with the other required documentation within 6 months of submitting the online registration.

Notification to get back your Norwegian citizenship must be submitted in person at the Embassy in Canberra within 6 months of online registration. To make an appointment, please book your appointment online.

The Embassy will transfer your notification electronically to the Embassy in Bangkok for processing.

Notifications to get back Norwegian citizenship are processed by UDI. You will find information about the processing time on UDI’s website. 

The Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok will notify you of the outcome of your application.

If your application has been rejected, you will receive a written explanation as to why it was rejected. You can appeal the decision.
