Have you seen the large mural painting decorating the UN Library? Did you know that the artist was a pacifist and cultural celebrity?
Henrik Sørensen, an important artist in Norway in the 20th century, was the obvious choice when the Norwegian government at the time decided to contribute to the decoration of Palais des Nations. Sørensen (1882-1962) was actively involved in social issues, worked for peace during the interwar period and supported the League of Nations. His painting “The Dream of Peace” was donated by Norway at a very precarious time in world history, in December 1939.
“The Dream of Peace” mural has been subject to controversy and discussion through the years. We take a closer look at the artist behind the mural and his vision of peace a century on.
Join us for an interesting discussion, introduced by renowned art historian Mr Svein Olav Hoff, museum director, author and one of the foremost experts on the rich work of the artist Sørensen. He will be joined by Ms Torild Skard, social scientist, writer, former MP & UNESCO director and a family friend of Sørensen.
