On 9 March 2020, following the International Women’s Day, Norway & UNFPA, together with partners, are organising a panel discussion to explore interlinkages between climate change, gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and the actions needed to respond to these challenges.
Climate change affects all, but women and girls are disproportionately impacted. Women are more likely to live in poverty, less likely to own land and often carry the responsibility of caring for children and elderly. While structural inequalities will persist, risk factors and vulnerabilities are exacerbated. In humanitarian contexts, this translates into dwindling resources and increased exposure to risks of gender-based violence, as well as reduced access to sexual and reproductive health services. Nonetheless, it is critical to recognize that women are also central agents for change, also in the climate change agenda, both in terms of mitigation and adaptation actions.
