Recommendations to Malta

STATEMENT

45th UPR Session of the Human Rights Council

on the human rights situation in Malta, as delivered by Mr. Martin Torbergsen Minister Counsellor, Permanent Representative of Norway in Geneva.

Vice President,

Norway welcomes the delegation of Malta and thanks for the presentation of the national report. We welcome the steps taken by Malta to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

Norway recommends that Malta:

  1. Take all necessary steps to guarantee the right to freedom of expression and the safety of journalists and media workers. 

  2. Improve the process of issuing and reviewing detention orders and ensure that migrants and refugees rescued at sea are promptly disembarked with full respect for their human rights.

  3. Ensure women and girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights, especially access to safe abortion, including the revision of restrictive legislation.

  4. Continue taking necessary measures to end gender-based discrimination in the workforce, especially wage disparities.
