President,

We welcome the opportunity to discuss this urgent matter.

Norway strongly condemns the military coup in Myanmar. We call for the immediate release of detained members of the democratically elected civilian government, members of civil society and human rights defenders.

We are deeply concerned about limitations placed on internet and media access in Myanmar. Freedom of expression and media freedom are fundamental rights in themselves, and also prerequisites for uncovering human rights violations. Journalists detained in the wake of the coup must be released. We strongly urge the authorities to cease all interference in the work of journalists.

We call on the authorities in Myanmar to ensure the full protection of all civilians without discrimination. The rights of ethnic and religious minorities, including the Rohingya people and other internally displaced persons, must be protected.

We strongly urge the military to refrain from violence and ensure people’s right to assembly and peaceful protest.

Norway continues to stand by the people of Myanmar in their aspirations for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

Thank you.
