President,

We thank the High Commissioner for his continued reporting. We share the concern over the human rights situation in Palestine.

In Gaza, the prospect for lasting peace is constantly threatened by ongoing violence and severe humanitarian conditions. Several hundred civilians have been killed since the ceasefire entered into force, including many children. All parties MUST uphold the ceasefire and continue to implement Security Council Resolution 2803. Palestinian ownership is key to the success and legitimacy of any peace plan. Safe and unhindered humanitarian access must be ensured throughout Gaza.

Norway condemns the recent Israeli decision to expand its own control over the occupied West Bank. This unilateral decision is illegal and lacks validity under international law. We urge Israeli authorities to respect previous agreements with Palestine. We call on Israel to prevent the continued expansion of illegal settlements and settler violence, and to hold those responsible to account, in line with their obligations under international law.

The only way to lasting peace is a two-state solution based on internationally recognized borders. Norway continues to support any effort towards that end.

Thank you.
