SC: Syria - Political

Statement by Permanent Representative Ambassador Mona Juul on the political situation in Syria, 20 December 2021.

Let me start by thanking Special Envoy Pedersen for his briefing, and for his and his team’s tireless efforts to seek a political solution in Syria.

We are encouraged by the Special Envoy’s recent consultations with key actors on the step-for-step approach. Norway urges all actors involved in the conflict- including the Syrian Government- to contribute constructively to this process. Despite the deep disagreements, we believe there is still a shared interest in providing a better future for the Syrian people, and ensuring stability in the region.

Issues like the release of detainees, the safe and dignified return of refugees, combating terrorism, and inclusive political reform, should all be part of the process.

The status quo on the ground, both in government-controlled areas and elsewhere, is not sustainable.

President,

The constitutional committee also plays an important role. Both in and of itself, and as a confidence building measure. We encourage all parties to contribute to the process in good faith, and in a constructive manner. Norway gives our full support to the Special Envoy’s approach.

Finally President,

In closing, let me reiterate the need to implement all parts of resolution 2254, including a nationwide ceasefire.
