Mr. President,
I am delivering this statement on behalf of Denmark and my own country, Norway.
First, let me start by thanking the Executive Director for his statement this morning and commending you on the results UNFPA has delivered; results that have translated into real possibilities, hopes and freedom for thousands of girls, women, boys and men in the countries where you work.
Gender equality and the right of women to decide freely over their own bodies has been integral to the development of our societies and is a vital part of our policies today. The basic principle underlying our two countries’ efforts to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) is that this is a fundamental human right.
SRHR is vital for preventing unnecessary suffering and death due to sexually transmitted diseases and complications during pregnancy and childbirth. SRHR also makes it possible for girls and women to plan their pregnancies, complete schooling and participate in the labour market. In other words, SRHR is essential for the economic and political empowerment of women. SRHR is therefore crucial for fighting poverty, creating sustainable development and reaching the goals set in Agenda 2030. (Check against delivery)
