IGN: Security Council Reform

Statement by Deputy Permanent Representative May-Elin Stener in intergovernmental negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform, 3 April 2017.

I am speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and my own country, Norway.

We would like to thank the co-facilitators – Ambassador Jinga and Ambassador Khiari – for their hard work and guidance in these discussions.

We reaffirm our commitment to engage in our collective efforts to reform the Security Council.

The Security Council needs to become more transparent, more effective, more accountable, and more representative than is currently the case. This requires a reform.

A natural step forward would be negotiations, based on a text.

The co-chairs can rest assured that the Nordics will support them in their efforts to create a constructive dialog among Member States, with a view to achieve further progress during this session of the General Assembly.
