GA: Briefing by the President of the General Assembly

Statement delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Andreas Løvold

Mr President,

We make note of your priorities going forward and will support you in any way we can in achieving them.

We are also thankful for your efforts for the effective functioning of the General Assembly. This institution is vital to a peaceful global order based on international law. In times of global tensions and geopolitical rivalry, we need the UN and the General Assembly to provide a platform for dialogue. This Assembly has achieved great things in the past. We have faith that it will continue to do so.

Mr President,

In 2025, it will be important for this Assembly to build on the positive momentum generated by the Summit of the Future. The Pact for the future provides us with direction for the further development and strengthening of multilateral cooperation. Norway will do our part.

One key area of focus for us is the Global Digital Compact. Closing digital divides is essential for development. Norway continues to engage in broad multistakeholder mobilisation in support of the GDC, including through the Alliance for digital public goods. The 2025 Internet Governance Forum will be an important occasion for furthering the agenda and ensure a free, open and secure internet. As this year’s host, we welcome all Member States to Oslo in June.

Another important priority is the 2025 Financing for Development Conference in Spain. Norway will continue our long-standing engagement for development financing, global tax cooperation and anticorruption.

Mr President,

Leading up to the UN’s 80th anniversary, we must also maintain momentum on UN reform. Together with cross-regional partners, Norway will continue to come up with and advocate for practical and achievable improvements of how the UN system operates. An open, transparent, efficient and coordinated UN is an even stronger UN.

Thank you.
