GA: 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter

Statement delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative Andreas Løvold.

President,

The UN Charter represents a turning point in history.

When it was signed by 50 nations, including Norway, on this day, it marked the beginning of a transition away from a world ravaged by war, excessive nationalism, and colonial exploitation.

The UN Charter established a universal body and a multilateral system that treats all members equally – through cooperation, dialogue and the rule of law.

For Norway, the Charter is the strongest collective security guarantee we have.

Respect for, and compliance with the Charter is a necessity, not an option.

President,

It is important to emphasize that even in an increasingly turbulent world, the vast majority of UN Member States continue to uphold the UN Charter and international law.

It is vital therefore that we – the majority – speak out when the Charter and its principles are trampled on.

Double standards undermine universality, the heart and essence of the Charter.

President,

Built on the Charter, today’s UN System continues to perform a critical role by advancing lasting peace, development and human rights. By implementing the Pact for the future and Agenda 2030.

So, let’s act with determination and re-affirm the vision, ideals and principles as enshrined in the Charter by making the UN equipped to deliver, with impact – for the most vulnerable.

Towards building a better future – together.

Thank you.
