3C: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders

Joint Nordic-Baltic statement (NB8) delivered by First Secretary Ms. Siri Birkeland

Thank you, madam Chair,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic states.

Human rights defenders and a vibrant civil society are cornerstones for a pluralistic and democratic society. They form part of a bigger ecosystem together with the rule of law, independent judiciary and free media.

All human rights are indivisible and interdependent. There is no hierarchy. Civil and political rights and economic, social and cultural rights go hand in hand and should be promoted and protected simultaneously and at the same pace – online and offline.

We therefore welcome the special rapporteur’s decision to focus her report on the important role human rights defenders play to achieve the SDGs. Human rights defenders working on economic, social and cultural rights deserve the same recognition, support and protection as other human rights defenders.

Madame special rapporteur, - what is the best way for states to involve human rights defenders in their work towards meeting the SDGs?

Thank you.
