This statement was delivered to the press following the adoption of a Security Council Presidential Statement on Ukraine, that was initiated by Norway and Mexico.
On behalf of Norway and Mexico, I am pleased to announce that the Security Council just now unanimously adopted a presidential statement, expressing strong support to the Secretary-General’s efforts towards a peaceful solution to the war in Ukraine.
This is the first joint statement from the Security Council on the war in Ukraine.
Yesterday we heard the Secretary-General’s briefing from his meetings in Moscow, Kiev and the region. We have seen that as a result of this visit evacuations from Mariupol were possible and that more efforts are underway.
This is an example that diplomacy can work.

The adoption of the PRST today shows that the Council is united in supporting the UN and his SG in finding a diplomatic solution.
Both our countries continue to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Preventive Diplomacy and mediation have been at the top of Norway´s and Mexico’s crosscutting priorities in our work at the UN. Last week we held a meeting in Mexico City on this topic. During the seminar, we identified areas of cooperation in this field, including in the Security Council. We are glad that today we see the first results of this fruitful cooperation between our countries.
SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENTIAL STATEMENT
The Security Council expresses deep concern regarding the maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine.
The Security Council recalls that all Member States have undertaken, under the Charter of the United Nations, the obligation to settle their international disputes by peaceful means.
The Security Council expresses strong support for the efforts of the Secretary-General in the search for a peaceful solution.
The Security Council requests the Secretary-General to brief the Security Council in due course after the adoption of the present statement.
