Dear friends,
Today, we mark the 30th anniversary of the signing of this document by the Foreign Ministers of Norway and Ukraine. It is the protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations, signed on 5 February 1992.
In it, the two sides agreed to develop their relations on the basis of principles of sovereign equality, mutual respect, territorial integrity and non-interference in the domestic affairs of each other in accordance with the UN Charter.
Since then, the ties between Norway and Ukraine have continuously developed broader and stronger.
Our relations can be traced back 1000 years, when Norwegian viking kings visited Kyiv. One of them, king Harald III, the “hard ruler”, actually married one of the daughters of Grand Prince Yaroslav of Kyiv. She moved to Norway and was Harald’s queen for 20 years under the name of Ellisiv.
Since Ukraine’s independence in 1991, and especially after the events in 2014, Norway has been actively assisting Ukraine in its reform efforts and European integration process.
We are a firm supporter of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and will remain a reliable partner for Ukraine in the time to come.

Дорогі друзі,
Сьогодні ми відзначаємо 30-ту річницю підписання цього документа міністрами закордонних справ Норвегії та України. Це Протокол про встановлення дипломатичних відносин, підписаний 5 лютого 1992 року.
У ньому обидві сторони домовилися розвивати свої відносини на основі принципів суверенної рівності, взаємоповаги, територіальної цілісності та невтручання у внутрішні справи одна одної відповідно до Статуту ООН.
Відтоді зв’язки між Норвегією та Україною постійно розвивалися та ставали ширшими і міцнішими.
Наші стосунки сягають 1000 років тому, коли норвезькі королі вікінгів відвідували Київ. Один із них, король Гаральд III, «сміливий правитель», одружився з однією з дочок великого князя Київського Ярослава. Вона переїхала до Норвегії і протягом 20 років була королевою Харальда під ім’ям Еллісів. З моменту здобуття Україною незалежності в 1991 році, а особливо після подій 2014 року, Норвегія активно допомагає Україні в її реформах та в процесі європейської інтеграції. Ми є твердим прихильником суверенітету та територіальної цілісності України і залишимося надійним партнером для України в майбутньому.
