The Democratic Republic of Congo endorses the Safe Schools Declaration

As the work to protect education during armed conflict continues, The Democratic Republic of Congo has recently transmitted its letter of endorsement, and thus become the 55th state to endorse the Safe Schools Declaration.

The endorsement follows Argentina’s recent announcement, made during a World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey, of their intent to host a second conference on Safe Schools in Buenos Aires.

Since the Safe Schools Declaration was adopted by 37 states in Oslo in May 2015, an additional 18 states have endorsed the declaration, and thereby committed themselves to work together to strengthen the protection of educational facilities, their students, and staff from attack.

The latest endorsement by the Democratic Republic of Congo demonstrates the continued relevance and importance of the Declaration as a tool to strengthen the protection of education during armed conflict.
