UNAIDS PCB42 in Geneva

26th - 28th June UNAIDS hosted its 42nd Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) meeting in Geneva. Member states, UNAIDS Cosponsors and NGOs jointly discussed important topics such as the implementation of the UNAIDS joint programme action plan as part of UN reform, harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and abuse of power, discrimination and stigma, and how to implement and follow up targets to meet the overall goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Preventing new infections is key to ending the HIV epidemic by 2030. Important topics for Norway include comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), harm reduction, HIV prevention in prisons and promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Gender equality and human rights are key components for successful HIV prevention. The full respect for all human rights is also about the right not to be subject to stigma and discrimination. Norway will continue to support UNAIDS in its effort to address discrimination in all its forms, including in healthcare settings, and welcomes that new discrimination targets were included in the Global Aids Monitoring 2018: Indicators for monitoring the UN Political Declaration on Ending AIDS by 2030.

2016 was the first year that over half of all people living with HIV received treatment. Coordinated activities across the Joint Programme has been central to this success. Norway supports UNAIDS in its efforts to coordinate, monitor and facilitate a joint response to HIV.

Norway welcomes the strengthened focus on HIV prevention and the establishment of the Global HIV Prevention Coalition, including the HIV Prevention 2020 Road Map. Norway is a member. It was established in 2017 to accelerate global efforts in HIV prevention. It aims to strengthen and sustain political commitment for primary prevention by setting a common agenda among decision-makers, donors and programme implementers. The coalition provides accountability by tracking yearly progress against national targets through score cards.
