Member States Convene for the 70th World Health Assembly

The governing body of the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Health Assembly commenced on 22 May 2017. For nearly two weeks, member states will discuss global health issues, and how the WHO should address these. High-level attendance from member states, NGOs and others, underscores the importance attached to the assembly in global health governance.

A large Norwegian delegation is attending, led by the Minister of Health and Care Services, Mr. Bent Høie, including representatives from the Ministry of Health and Care Services, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the Norwegian Directorate of Health, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the Norwegian Research Council.

A number of key global health issues figure on this year’s agenda. Combatting the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and underlining our strong support for WHOs work in this context will be important. Preventing and responding to acute public health risks that have the potential to cross borders and threaten people worldwide through the implementing International Health Regulations (IHR) is another crucial topic. Supporting the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (CEPI), which aims to create new vaccines for emerging infectious diseases to ensure the world is better secured against epidemics in the future, is also of high importance to Norway. Working towards universal health coverage for all through building resilient health systems is another of our top priorities.

The above mentioned issues are non-exhaustive, and Norway is engaging actively in all discussions during the World Health Assembly. With many dedicated individuals with the common goal of improving the global health for people all over the world, we are well away in our work to ensure no-one is left behind.
