Recommendations to Iraq (27.01.2025)

President,

Norway commends Iraq for the implementation of the Yazidi Survivors Law No. 8 of 2021 and for enacting a civilian protection policy. However, we are still concerned about the human rights situation.

Norway recommends that Iraq:

1. Imposes an immediate moratorium on the death penalty and ensures respect for prisoners' rights, including by investigating allegations of torture and inadequate medical care.

2. Amends new and existing domestic legislation, including the Personal Status Law, in compliance with CEDAW.

3. Ensures freedom of expression, allowing civil society, journalists, human rights defenders, faith-based organizations and others, to participate in public discourse without fear of retaliation.

4. Protects and ensures the rights of all internally displaced persons, including the right to a voluntary return in safety.

We wish Iraq a successful review.

Thank you.
