Interactive dialogue on the oral update of the OHCHR on the human rights situation in and around El Fasher,
in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Sudan

Statement by Iceland, on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States

9 February 2026

Mr. President,

On behalf of The Nordic and Baltic countries I thank the OHCHR for its oral update on the human rights situation in and around El Fasher.

The people of Sudan are currently facing the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe and famine, driven by armed conflict, fighting and considerable humanitarian access constraints.

Initial assessments of possible crimes against humanity are alarming. Those few remaining in El Fasher continue to face extreme protection risks, including sexual and gender-based violence, with civilian suffering at an unimaginable scale. Reports of limited access and restrictions on safe movement are deeply concerning.

The FFM continues to play a vital role towards future accountability in El Fasher and in Sudan. Breaking the cycle of violence and impunity is vital, ensuring that mass atrocities, such as what unfolded in El Fasher, are not repeated. We are particularly concerned with the situation of the civilian population in the Kordofans.

We underline the obligation of all parties to ensure respect for international humanitarian and human rights law. Ending the conflict is critical to enable progress towards an inclusive political process and a civilian-led democratic transition in Sudan.

We further encourage all parties to work with the FFM, unhindered access to El Fasher and all areas in Sudan is urgently needed.

I thank you.
