Mr President,

We would like to thank the High Commissioner for her oral update, and her tireless efforts for human rights during her mandate.

It is a time of great crises: health, climate, war, and a looming food insecurity crisis. A strong human rights pillar is needed more than ever, to promote human rights - women’s rights - every individual’s rights.

Norway condemns in the strongest terms Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine. Millions of Ukrainians are suffering the consequences of Russia’s brutal warfare.

Russia’s attack does not only have devastating effects on the civilian population in Ukraine, but also on people far from the war zone.
It exacerbates an already strained global food security situation.
We must all step up efforts to prevent hunger and famine.

We reiterate our deep concern for the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls.
The Taliban must ensure that women and girls are able to enjoy their right to education, work and freedom of movement.

Madam High Commissioner,

The human rights situation in Xinjiang, China, is of great concern. We anticipate the publication of your announced report, which is an opportunity to provide important insight into the situation.

Thank you.
