Ukrainian side event. Statement on Ukraine. (01.03.22)

Statement delivered by Ambassador Tine Mørch Smith, Permanent Representative of Norway

We underscore Norway’s unwavering support to the government and people of Ukraine. Norway strongly condemns Russia’s attack on Ukraine and condemns Belarus for facilitating the attack. It is entirely unjustified, unprovoked and irresponsible.

The attack is a severe breach of international law, including the UN Charter. It constitutes an act of aggression against an independent peaceful country. Russia bears the full responsibility for the crisis, which puts civilians at grave risks.

The Russian aggression has severe consequences for human rights. Independent monitoring of the human rights situation is essential, to limit and prevent further human rights violations. And to hold perpetrators of such violations and abuses accountable. Ensuring safety of journalists and media freedom is crucial.

Russia must immediately stop its military operations against Ukraine. The priority now must be to save lives and prevent further human rights violations.

Thank you.
