General Debate

STATEMENT, 15 June 2017

Mr. President,

Norway remains concerned about negative trends in terms of the freedom of expression, media freedom, the safety of journalists, and a shrinking space for civil society and human rights defenders worldwide.

We also remain deeply concerned about the situation of women in many countries, including in the Middle East. Their situation is particularly precarious in conflict situations such as South Sudan and by the unspeakable atrocities committed by ISIL.

In Saudi Arabia and Iran, we urge the governments to create a safe and enabling environment for human rights defenders.

We are also concerned about the new NGO Law diminishing space for civil society in Egypt.

In Venezuela, we urge the government to respect the separation of powers, the citizens’ democratic rights and basic human rights.

Lastly, Norway remains deeply concerned about the human rights situation in the DPRK.

Thank you.
