President,
Ensuring the strongest possible UN for the twenty-first century should be the guiding star of the UN80 initiative.
The Pact for the Future set the course. The UN Charter, the UDHR and the human rights treaties are a roadmap to a better world for all. A strengthened human rights pillar should come out of the UN80 process.
We must continue to uphold the protection and promotion of human rights in the future by enhancing our capabilities to prevent and address new and emerging challenges. Technical cooperation must be part of that, the Universal Periodic Review, as well as the ability of this Council to respond to grave human rights situations. We are also compelled to underscore the importance of ICC being able to carry out its mandate.
Our approach in the process is guided by two main objectives:
- First, to achieve more efficient deliveries on the ground we can reduce duplication and enhance transparency and accountability
- Second, securing adequate, predictable and sustainable financing of the UN human rights pillar, including the OHCHR.
We can make the UN human rights architecture more effective for all rights-holders everywhere. The UN should work together, as One, to strengthen the respect for Human Rights. The measure of success is in the real-world difference we can make in the lives of people.
Thank you.
