Statement on Mali

Item 10: Interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on Mali. Statement, 21 March 2018.

As delivered by First Secretary Paul Ø. Bjørdal

President,

We thank the Independent Expert for his thorough presentation.

Norway is concerned about the human rights situation in Mali. Implementation of the peace agreement from 2015 must be accelerated to address the human rights violations and abuses effectively and thoroughly. Responsibility for this lies primarily with the authorities. But all signatory parties to the peace agreement should effectively prevent human rights violations and abuses. Norway is particularly concerned by continued impunity for violence against women, including FGM, and the disastrous effects of the crisis on the right to education.

In the lead-up to the planned presidential elections in July/August, Norway encourages Malian authorities and all political actors to ensure a transparent, peaceful and open democratic process, which will allow the Malian population to exercise their right to vote.

Thank you.
