Item 12.4: Prevention and control of non-communicable diseases

Last updated: 09.06.2016 //

Chair,

Norway remains committed to keeping NCDs high on the global health agenda. The indicators in annex 1 in the report shows that progress in implementing global action plan is being made, albeit slowly.

When it comes to the attainment of the nine voluntary global targets as detailed in annex 3 the picture is uneven. We are pleased that tobacco consumption is decreasing. One worrying exception is the indicators on overweight and obesity, which are increasing.

The way we see it, the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development has renewed and strengthened the push for WHO for working across sectors. We would like to see the partnership dimension strengthened.

In this context, we also hope that the upcoming 9th conference on health promotion can provide an important impetus to the work of enhancing positive lifestyle factors in the prevention of NCDs.

We are pleased by the good work of the Global Coordination Mechanism regarding multi-stakeholder engagement for NCD prevention and appreciated the reports being made available online.

We consider the GCM working groups an important element in the implementation of the declaration of the high-level meeting on NCDs.

Chair, we support the proposed method for the technical exercise of updating Annex 3 of the action plan with the latest available evidence.

Finally, we support the resolution with the suggestions made by Monaco.

Thank you.
