A main purpose of the seminar was to promote inter-organisational cooperation in working to fulfil the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Among the organizations present were the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UNCTAD, the International Trade Centre (ITC), and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Norway participated together with other colleagues from the WTO Missions in Geneva.
Conclusions from the discussions include the need for climate negotiators to consider trade as part of the solution, and for trade negotiators to include climate concerns in their agendas. Trade has a central role to play in advancing a just transition to more climate - friendly industries, and in diversifying national economies in order to build resilience against the potentially adverse impacts of climate mitigation policies.
