Vacancy notice: Locally hired Political Analyst

The Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok promotes Norwegian political and economic interests in Thailand and Cambodia. With around 45 staff, the Embassy is one of Norway’s largest diplomatic missions worldwide, covering a broad scope of political and economic affairs, consular services, human resources, and visa processing.The Embassy is seeking a highly motivated Political Analyst who will play a key role in providing quality analysis on political developments and strengthening Norway’s bilateral engagement in Thailand.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high quality analysis on political and sector-specific developments in Thailand and Thailand’s foreign policy, Thailands engagement in ASEAN, including the implications of those developments.
  • Provide strategic advice to the Embassy on Norway’s engagement with Thailand in relevant policy areas.
  • Develop and maintain a wide-ranging network of contacts, including government ministries and agencies, political parties, think tanks, academia, civil society and international organisations.
  • Represent the Embassy at external meetings, conferences, and events, including outside normal working hours when required
  • Support preparations for meetings and events; prepare backgrounding, talking points, speeches and records of conversations as directed.
  • Contribute to the Embassy’s work on policy and activities linked to human rights, democracy and media freedom.

The above is not exhaustive and may be subject to change and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on tasks as required.

 

Essential qualifications, competencies and skills

  • A relevant university degree at Master’s level, preferably in political science, international relations, law, economics, or a related field with a strong political component.
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience in an international role or context, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Good knowledge of the Thai political system, government departments, regulators, and policy-making institutions. Possess an established range of contacts in these fields.
  • Strong analytical, research, and report-writing skills, with the ability to prioritise competing tasks and to deliver under pressure.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken Thai and English is essential. Excellent drafting skills in English are required. A recognized English language proficiency test (e.g. TOEIC with a score of 750 or above) is an advantage.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to handle a variety of tasks for a foreign employer

 

Other Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience in organizing visits, meetings, and events such as seminars or workshops.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize and deliver results under pressure.
  • The successful candidate will also be a good team player and engage in and contribute to the wider activities of the Embassy, including trade promotion, when required.

 

General conditions

  • This is a locally recruited position at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok. The successful candidate will be offered a contract under Thai labor law.
  • Salary and benefits will be based on the Embassy’s local salary, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • The position is full-time, with some evening and weekend work required.
