President,
Norway welcomes recent opening of a national OHCHR office in Mozambique. However, we are concerned by reports of serious human rights violations following the 2024 elections, including excessive use of force and attacks on journalists and human rights defenders. We are also concerned about continued insecurity in Cabo Delgado.
Norway recommends that Mozambique:
- Implement measures to ensure free, transparent and credible elections, including accountability for election-related violence and the release of individuals arbitrarily detained.
- Ensure unimpeded humanitarian access in conflict-affected areas and accountability for violations.
- Strengthen the protection of children’s rights, including by implementing the handover protocol for children formerly associated with armed groups.
- Strengthen measures to protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls, in line with national strategies.
In closing, I thank Mozambique and the delegation here today for their willingness to engage acitvely in this dialogue.
Thank you.
