STATEMENT
Human Rights Council 62th Session
Item 2 - Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty
Statement delivered by Iceland on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States
25 June 2026
President,
I have the honor to speak on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States.
We thank the Special Rapporteur for his report and his dedicated efforts throughout his term within the mandate.
Comprehensive and rights-based approaches are integral to effectively reducing poverty. When addressing the human rights challenges presented by extreme poverty, it is necessary to address contributing factors such as inequality and exclusion, and not solely income. In this context, we welcome the report’s reflections on multidimensional approaches to measuring and addressing poverty and inequality.
The Nordic-Baltic States attach great importance to strengthening social protection systems and ensuring equal access to quality public services. As highlighted by the report, these are important elements in the context of reducing poverty. Moreover, we share the report’s recognition of the links between poverty and climate challenges, which disproportionally affect those in vulnerable situations, and call for inclusive policy responses.
Mr. Special Rapporteur, throughout your experience as mandate holder, what measures have proven most effective in ensuring that policy outcomes draw on the meaningful participation of people with lived experiences?
I thank you.
