18 March 2025

Mr. President,

I speak on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic states.

For decades, the Syrian people have suffered grave human rights violations: arbitrary detention, torture, sexual violence, and enforced disappearances. The Assad regime, with the direct support of Russia, conducted mass atrocities against Syrians, including the use of chemical weapons.

The fall of the oppressive Assad regime presents a historic opportunity for Syria. The Syrian people must be given the reigns to stabilise and rebuild their country, with support of the international community. We urge the new Syrian administration to commit to ensuring justice and the rule of law, as well as protecting and promoting human rights for all, including the rights of women and girls. The effort must be aligned with the gradual lifting of international sanctions on Syria.

We urge the new Syrian administration to fully cooperate with relevant human rights monitoring mechanisms, and to grant them unhindered access to the country.

Accountability is crucial for just, comprehensive, and lasting peace. We reiterate our full support for the Commission of Inquiry and the IIIM. Those responsible must be held accountable.

I thank you!
