Adviser/senior adviser - political affairs, governance and human rights

The Royal Norwegian Embassy represents the Norwegian Government in Ethiopia. The Embassy supports the bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The Embassy has 13 diplomats and 22 local employees.

Position:

We are currently looking for a dynamic, articulate and well-organised individual for the position of Adviser/Senior Adviser for Political affairs, governance and human rights.

This is a key position within the Embassy: the leading adviser on all things related to domestic Ethiopian politics. Working closely with the posted political first secretary as well as the Ambassador, the person will be expected to use his or her highly developed analytical skills, contacts and judgement to support the Norwegian Embassy’s work in Ethiopia. In addition, he or she will manage projects related to human rights, peacebuilding, recovery and reconstruction. The jobholder should therefore have (and continuously develop) a wide and detailed knowledge of Ethiopian society and politics, including humanitarian issues, and provide neutral, high-quality analysis. The adviser will be part of the Embassy’s bilateral team. The main responsibilities will be to:

  • Produce regular, targeted reporting and briefings for various audiences on developments relating to politics, security, economic and humanitarian issues in Ethiopia;
  • Manage the grant portfolio and appraise project proposals within the field. Follow up agreements with partners, including government entities, multilateral organisations and civil society organisations.
  • Represent the Embassy in external meetings.
  • Support visit and event management, taking a lead on visits by the Ambassador within Ethiopia: producing programmes; overseeing logistics; and providing support on the trips themselves. Providing ad-hoc translation/interpretation.
  • Contribute to communication materials, social media content, and events aimed at raising awareness of Norway.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 

  • A master's degree in political science, social sciences, human rights, law, economics, or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in the fields of governance, politics or international relations
  • Experience in political analysis, human rights and/or governance
  • Experience in working with national authorities, multilateral organisations and CSOs.
  • Excellent written English and verbal communication skills
  • English and Amharic (both spoken and written) are essential

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Other Ethiopian languages would be an advantage
  •  Relationships and contacts across Federal and Regional Governments, civil society and academia

Salary: equivalent of 1300 – 2000 USD per month according to qualifications.

Terms of Employment: Full time fixed contract with 6 months’ probation period.
