Before applying for a personal number for a child, the parental situation must be established with Norwegian authorities.

Acknowledgement of paternity:
If one parent is registyered as a resident in Norway, both parents must sign the Acknowledgement of Paternity form at the Embassy in Pretoria.
Required documents include:
- Child's birth certificate with apostille
- Proof of the mother's marital status at the time of birth
- Passports of both parents
- Child's passport (if applicable)
Recognition of paternity established abroad:
If paternity or co-maternity is established outside of the Nordic countries, apply for recognition in Norway via NAV. Apply for recognition on paternity or co-maternity established abroad - nav.no
Required documents include:
- Child's birth certificate with apostille
- Vault Copy (BI-24) of the birth certificate with apostille (one can apply for the vault copy at Home Affairs simultaneously as registering the birth. Please note that this has to be done at a Home Affairs branch and not at the hospital).
- Proof of the mother's marital status at the time of birth
- Passports of both parents
- Child's passport (if applicable)
