Statement on the 12th Independence Anniversary of South Sudan

Today (July 9) represents a significant moment in the history of South Sudan. On behalf of the Government of Norway I wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the people of South Sudan on this 12th Celebration of Independence.

There has been a high price for the independence of South Sudan. We commend and lift-up ALL those committed to upholding the values of freedom, democracy and human rights.

Throughout the long conflict for Independence there have been many efforts to support peace and prosperity for everyone in this beautiful land. Following the Peace Agreement in 1972, Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) initiated Norway’s engagement in South Sudan, along with Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), positively providing humanitarian assistance and long-term development collaboration.

The Norwegian Government, along with other international partners have been resolute in supporting the peace process for the people of South Sudan. With respect, I urge the Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to focus on the difficult tasks and expedite the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

Norway is committed to stand with the South Sudanese people working for a peaceful and thriving Future for All.

Happy Independence Day!

H.E. Linken Nymann Berryman,
Norwegian Ambassador to South Sudan.
