Joint Statement on the Massacre in Pankor, Ayod County

The Delegation of the European Union as well as the Embassies of Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States are appalled by credible reports of a deliberate massacre of civilians on 21 February in Pankor village, Ayod County, Jonglei State, reportedly perpetrated by forces linked to the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF).

We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to inclusive and meaningful dialogue between all parties to the ongoing conflict in South Sudan. This attack occurs amid a disturbing surge in violence across Jonglei State. Those responsible for such crimes, and for fuelling escalating violence, must be brought to justice, regardless of status or political connections.
