Norway aligns with the statement made by the European Union, but allow me to make a few remarks in my national capacity.
Mr. Chair,
First. The Russian narrative that NATO and European capitals are responsible for Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine is, in one word, false. It was Russia that decided to invade Ukraine. It is Russia that continuously decides to test Allied resolve by hitting targets closer and closer to allied borders. The attempted Russian attack with drones rigged with explosives at Leipzig Airport in Germany, and this weekend's attack on the passenger train on the border to Poland, mark an unprecedented and dangerous escalation. Norway strongly condemns Russia’s aggression.
Second. Our support for Ukraine is not just words spoken in this forum, but ongoing, practical efforts, such as the continued cooperation for improved air defence capabilities. Norway will continue our annual support to Ukraine of around 7.9 billion euros. We will continue to innovate our defence industry to support the needs of Ukraine and improve our own resilience. This was the clear message from Prime Minister Støre to president Zelenskyj as he visited Oslo last week.
Third. Russia can end this war today. Ukraine continues to demonstrate their willingness for peace. We urge Russia to take steps towards peace, to cease all attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure, withdraw their military forces out of Ukraine and genuinely engage in negotiations.
