Statement on Russia`s ongoing aggression against Ukraine and illegal occupation of Crimea

Delivered by Chargé d ’Affairs Henrik Malvik at the Permanent Council Vienna, 20 January 2022.

Mr. Chairman,

Norway is aligned with the EU statement, but I would like to underline a few points.

Norway consistently supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

Norway is deeply concerned by the ongoing Russian military build-up in and on the borders of Ukraine. We call on Russia to take responsibility by pulling back its forces and thereby reduce tensions.

We support the continuation of talks to address security concerns. In this regard we appreciate the Polish Chairpersonship’s proposal to find an appropriate format for OSCE engagement and enhanced dialogue.

Mr. Chairman,

The SMM is important for monitoring respect for the cease-fire and assisting the civilian population in conflict-affected areas.

We regret the restrictions on the freedom of movement of the SMM in areas not controlled by the government.

All parties must ensure access of SMM to all parts of Ukraine in accordance with its mandate, and refrain from targeting UAVs, cameras and other equipment.

Mr. Chairman,

In conclusion, let me reiterate in this forum that Norway supports a European security order based on international law and national sovereignty.
