Anita Nergaard

Ambassador

Ms. Nergaard holds the position of Norway's permanent representative in NATO since September 2022. Her recent assignment was senior advisor on China at the Norwegian Foreign Ministry in Oslo.

She served as Norway’s Ambassador to Singapore from 2017 - 2021, and as Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO from 2012 - 2017.

Previously, Ambassador Nergaard held several positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She served as Director of Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Regional Organisations from 2010, where her responsibilities also included regional cooperation in the High North and Arctic, as well as the OSCE and Council of Europe. She served as Director of Security Policy, Crisis Management, Global Security Affairs and the US and Canada from 2005, including peace support and stabilisation operations through the UN, NATO, the EU and the OSCE, security sector reform, counterterrorism, and counter violent extremism, as well as arms control and non-proliferation. She served at Norway’s Embassy in Ankara from 1997 and at Norway’s delegation to NATO from 2000.

Prior to entering the Foreign Service, Ms. Nergaard was in the Central Bank of Norway, where she worked with financial stability and asset management. She holds an MSc in Economics and Business Administration and a PhD Study Programme Degree in Economics from NHH - Norwegian School of Economics. 

Ms. Nergaard has assisted various Government Commissions, including on financial stability, financial market regulations, and currently advises a Government Commission on geopolitics and the sovereign wealth fund.

Ms. Nergaard is married and has three children.
