Madam Chair,
On 24 August 1991, Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union. More than thirty years later, Ukraine is once again compelled to defend that independence. Russia’s war of aggression seeks to deny the Ukrainian people the freedom and future they have chosen.
Ukraine’s Independence Day is not only a day of national celebration, but also a reminder of the price of freedom—and of our duty to act.
Yesterday, the Norwegian Government announced around NOK 7 billion to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence. Together with Germany, this will provide two Patriot systems and missiles, as well as other types of air defence. These systems will protect civilians, safeguard military units, and shield critical infrastructure. By joining forces, we are stepping up our support even further.
Today, Norway’s Prime Minister is in Kyiv to demonstrate this commitment in person, and to engage with President Zelenskyy and his government on the next steps—both for Ukraine’s defence and for its future on the path to peace.
Colleagues, a free and democratic Ukraine is essential for European security. If we fail to support Ukraine, we fail our own founding principles. Aggression cannot be rewarded. Sovereignty cannot be negotiated away. No negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine.
On this Independence Day, Norway reaffirms its steadfast support—until Ukraine’s freedom and security are fully secured.
Thank you.
