Are you planning to travel to Norway and need a visa or residence permit?
As of March 2nd 2020, the Norwegian Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro will no longer be the responsible mission for applications for Schengen visitor’s visa or residence permit to Norway from applicants residing in Brazil. Instead, applications submitted to VFS application centre in Rio de Janeiro will be sent to the Norwegian Consulate General in New York, USA, which is the regional hub for immigration cases.
While most application procedures and requirements will remain the same, there are some changes that you should be aware of:
- Where to apply?
All applicants must meet and apply in person at the VFS Global application centre in Rio de Janeiro. VFS Global will ensure that the applications are sent to New York for further processing. You will also be able to collect the decision documents at VFS Global.
- Application fees
There will be an application fee payable online when you register your application in the Application Portal Norway, and a service fee charged by VFS Global on your application day. Certain applications submitted in Brazil might also will be subject to a courier fee to cover transportation of the application documents between the VFS application centre and New York. The courier fee will only be charged if you need a visa to go to Norway or the Schengen area as your passport must be sent to the hub mission in New York for the issuance of a visa.
- Handling of passports from applicants
You need to hand in your passport for verification purposes when you submit your application.
If you are applying for a short stay visitor’s visa, your passport and application documents will be sent to New York, and the document control will be carried out at the Consulate General in New York.
If you are applying for a residence permit, the document control of your passport will be carried out locally at the consulate general in Rio de Janeiro, and your passport will be returned to you within few days after you submitted your application to VFS. If your application for residence permit is granted and you need a visa to go to Norway, you will have to send your passport to New York for the issuance of the visa. A secure courier sending will be assured by VFS, and you must expect to wait for some time for your passport to be returned to you.
More information about courier fees and dispatch times will follow shortly.
- Extended waiting time for visa applications
The processing time for Schengen visas to Norway is normally up to 15 days from the date the application is received at the Consulate General in New York. Please note that the dispatch time for sending the application documents between the VFS application centre and New York will come in addition. We highly recommend that you apply well in advance, at least 4-5 weeks prior to your planned trip. You may submit your application up to six months before your planned departure, or up to nine months for seafarers.
- Ongoing applications and notification of decisions
Applications for Schengen visa submitted prior to 2nd of March 2020 will be processed and finalized by the consulate general in Rio de Janeiro.
If you have applied for a residence permit, you will receive your decision letter in a sealed envelope at the VFS application centre. If you have given someone Power of attorney to represent you in your case, the notification will be sent to the person you have authorized.
Processing time: UDI
- Travelling to a different Schengen country?
Please note that Norway will continue to represent Sweden, Iceland and Denmark, which means that visa applications for these countries also will be sent to and processed by the Norwegian Consulate General in New York starting March 2nd 2020.
