King's Guard performed at Lincoln Memorial

Though the rifles were real, the bullets were blanks as the His Majesty the King’s Guard’s (HMKG) band and drill team brought its highly entertaining performance to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Thurs., May 3.

The band and drill team, known for its precision, pageantry, inventiveness and wit, has won numerous awards for its performances at home and abroad. Consisting entirely of conscripted soldiers doing their 12 months of national military service, the squad is nevertheless able to compete against professionals. It can often be seen parading through the streets of Oslo, where it has become a crowd favorite, and participating in military tattoos (a type of military musical performance).

The performance began with a seated concert, followed by a full drill display.

HMKG is a battalion of the Norwegian Army. It serves as the bodyguards for King Harald V and is also the main infantry unit responsible for the defense of Oslo.
